Can Rottweilers Eat Eggs?
Yes, almost all Rottweilers can eat eggs! However, there are some Rottweilers that should not eat eggs. Find out if eggs are okay to feed YOUR Rottweiler and other foods he/she can eat.
HOW AND WHY ARE EGGS GOOD FOR ROTTWEILERS
- Eggs are high in Protein: Large eggs pack about 6 grams of protein! Rotties with a high protein diet do not lean toward obesity.
- Eggs promote a Shiny Coat: Eggs contain avidin, one of the B Vitamins that promote a good metabolism and shiny fur.
- Eggs contain Riboflavin and Selenium: These nutrients are easily absorbed, helping dogs with digestive issues receive a protein boost.
HOW MANY EGGS CAN A ROTTWEILER EAT PER DAY?
- It’s suggested to feed an adult Rottweiler, or other large dog breeds, one egg per day along with his regular food.
- A pregnant or nursing Rottie can have more than one egg per day.
- For Rottie puppies, plain scrambled eggs are a great way to introduce solid food after weaning.
SHOULD A ROTTWEILER EAT RAW EGGS?
“Dogs Naturally” Magazine OPPOSES feeding dogs raw eggs. It is their stance that raw eggs pose a risk for salmonella, are too high in cholesterol (187 mg per large egg), and may cause a vitamin deficiency.
On the Contrary, “Daily Dog Stuff” RECOMMENDS raw eggs daily for their easy to digest proteins and amino acids.
Ultimately, it will be your decision and your Rottie’s preference that determine whether to cook the eggs or serve them raw. Just be sure you are ensuring food safety when serving your Rottie Eggs.
Eggcellent Tip: If you decide to prepare eggs for your dog, DO NOT add butter, fat, milk or spices. These can be disrupting to your Rotties digestive system. And your Rottie doesn’t need the extra fat and calories.
ARE THERE DOGS WHO SHOULDN’T EAT EGGS AT ALL?
Dogs and their digestive systems are as individualized as each human’s digestive system. Careful observation of your Rottie after eating eggs will determine whether or not eggs are the right choice for you and your Rottie.
If your Rottweiler vomits after eating eggs…eliminate eggs from his or her diet.
If your Rottweiler has diarrhea or constipation after eating eggs…eliminate eggs from his or her diet.
If your Rottweiler gets visibly uncomfortable gas after eating eggs or putrid smelling gas…eliminate eggs from his or her diet.
WHICH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES ARE SAFE TO FEED YOUR ROTTIE?
Most vegetables are perfectly safe for your Rottweiler to eat. Fruits aren’t necessary for dogs to consume at all, but most aren’t harmful. Do note that fruits may produce loose, wet stools.
Offer your Rottie a variety of vegetables and fruits like these to determine which are appropriate and which he or she prefers:
- CARROTS
- BANANAS
- POTATOES (COOKED ONLY)
- CUCUMBERS
- APPLES (NO SEEDS)
- SWEET POTATOES (COOKED ONLY)
- BEANS
- ZUCCHINI
There is nothing wrong with using vegetables or fruits to treat your Rottweiler to a snack! Your dog’s preference and your careful observation of the dog’s reaction to foods will dictate which ones are appropriate for your furbaby!
Besides meat, my Rottie, Maximus loves to eat sweet potatoes, apples, rice, carrots, and strawberries. He will also eat lettuce, zucchini squash, cucumbers and other kinds of vegetables. He loves big frozen carrots 🙂

CAN ROTTWEILERS HAVE DAIRY?
I was curious to know if my Rottie could have dairy. I didn’t know if it would upset his stomach or not. After a bit of research, I found out that Yes, Rottweilers can have dairy.
Some Rotties can tolerate milk without any issues. A full cup daily for adult dogs and a half cup for pups can provide calcium for strong bones and teeth. However, regular milk contains quite a bit of sugar. I don’t give my Rottie milk. If milk produces diarrhea for your Rottie, though, discontinue use. He may have lactose intolerance.
- Cheese is an acceptable treat for Rottweilers. Use caution when introducing it into his diet because cheese can cause constipation.
Start with no more than two ounces and observe your dog’s reaction to it once it passes all the way through him. If constipation occurs, lessen his serving size, or eliminate cheese altogether.
- Plain yogurt can be beneficial to your Rottie because it contains calcium, protein, vitamins, minerals, and probiotics. One cup of yogurt daily is sufficient, as long as your Rottie hasn’t shown any signs of lactose intolerance.
WHICH HUMAN FOODS SHOULD ROTTIES NEVER EAT?
- CHOCOLATE contains theobromine, which can build up to toxic levels in a dog’s system.
- ONIONS OR GARLIC contain thiosulphate, which causes anemia in dogs.
- FAST FOOD is laden with preservatives, salt, and fats, which will distress your Rottie’s digestive system.
- PRE-PACKAGED FOODS contain preservatives that act as carcinogens, potentially damaging the liver and kidneys.
- SPICY FOODS are impossible for your Rottweiler to taste. They don’t have the receptors for it. Spicy foods are a danger to the stomach lining and may cause other digestive issues like diarrhea or gas.
- SUGAR OR ARTIFICIAL SWEETENER (INCLUDES ALL CANDY) is toxic for your Rottie! Stomach issues can occur, sugar causes cavities AND can make your dog obese.
- GRAPES OR RAISINS contain a toxin capable of causing vomiting and kidney failure. Just skip them.
- MEAT FAT AND FATTY MEATS LIKE BACON can give your Rottweiler pancreatitis, a painful and sometimes fatal condition.
NEVER EVER ALLOW YOUR ROTTWEILER TO CONSUME ALCOHOL!!!
Never repeat a food that produces these results for your Rottie:
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea or Constipation
- Painful Gas and Bloating (and putrid-smelling)
- Lethargy
Opting for foods that are high in nutrients, like eggs, and low in fat will promote good muscle tone, healthy bones and teeth, and a shiny coat!
FOOD SAFETY AND EGGS
Follow these 3 SAFETY TIPS when serving your Rottweiler Eggs:
- Always use fresh eggs
Check Expiration Date Label OR
CHECK Farm Fresh eggs for freshness by dropping an egg in one cup of water. If the egg sinks to the bottom on its side, it is fresh. If it stands on end at the bottom, it is older, but still safe to eat. The closer it comes to floating, the older it is and should be discarded.
- Serve eggs at a proper temperature
Cooked eggs should reach a temperature of at least 160 degrees (f) to serve. Allow cooling. Refrigerated eggs should be served no longer than two hours after being removed from the refrigerator.
- Discard uneaten eggs within one hour of serving
This will eliminate risk any possibility of salmonella poisoning.

Where’s the meat? Dogs are carnivorous by design and will enjoy most meats offered.
Remember food safety when serving your Rottie meat! Never use expired meat or meat that’s been contaminated by another meat. Your Rottweiler can safely eat any meat.
Remember: Your Rottweiler is susceptible to food poisoning!
Dogs, like humans, are susceptible to salmonella and can pass it on to their humans! Raw meat poses a higher risk of contamination, but many Rottweiler owners serve it with no problems. You can learn more about Raw Diets Meats cooked to 160 degrees f are considered a low risk for contamination.
Your Rottie will most likely love meat treats! Caution and common sense go a long way here. You wouldn’t eat mystery roadkill, don’t allow your Rottie to eat it, either.
