Does a Cane Corso Shed a Lot?

A common question among new dog owners is whether a Cane Corso sheds a lot. The answer is yes, at certain times of the year.

In general, Cane Corsos do not shed too much, which means they are pretty low-grooming maintenance pets.  The coat of Cane Corsos is short and thick and does not adhere to clothing the way that other breeds do.

They also shed a bit each day. Generally, the amount of shed hair varies between dogs. Therefore, you can expect your dog to shed a small amount every day or weekly.

Read on to find out some secrets to help keep shedding manageable and how to keep your Corsos coat looking beautiful.

How Often Does a Cane Corso Shed?

Cane Corsos usually shed twice a year during the change of seasons.  As pups, Cane Corsos shed less than their adult counterparts, but they still shed some puppy hair.

When Does a Cane Corso Shed the Most?

The Cane Corso tends to shed the most during change of the cold to warm seasons.  This would be the late spring and early summertime time period.  And this includes their undercoat. The hair that comes off each day is typically half an ounce to an ounce, and over the course of a year, this can add up to a lot of hair.

Tips for Cane Corso Shedding

You can minimize the amount of fur your Corso sheds by implementing a few simple tips.

First, make sure your Corso eats a healthy diet.  If feeding kibble, be sure to feed him/her a good brand of large breed food. Many owners add an egg to a meal once or twice a week.

Brushing often will help with the mess of floating hair all over the floor.  If you’re in need of some help picking up all that hair on the floor, I highly recommend a robotic vacuum.  It is invaluable!

Sardines can also be a good choice.  Be sure the sardines are wild-caught, in water, and with no salt.

A diet rich in omega fatty acids can help with shedding and keep your big buddy’s coat soft and shiny.  You may also want to limit your dog’s bathing sessions to bimonthly.

Lastly, try using shampoo containing royal jelly and Vitamin E.
